I posted this on a forum but no anser after half day so I posted here.  Hope
you guys can give me feedback.

I have a domain controller having a bad backplane. This is a DL360 G4 with
drive C on a RAID 1. HP will replace the backplane but there is a change
that the current mirror is already corrupted. HP tech stated that if the
mirror is already corrupted we will have to restore the server from backup.
This server is a 2003 domain controller with integrated DNS, WINS, DHCP, and
5 FSMOs'. We have another same site DC2 and another DC3 at a remote
location. Global Catalog is already on each server.

HQ:
DC1: DNS server holding primary zones; DHCP server for HQ location; 5 FSMO
roles; WINS server push/pull with DC2 (same site) and DC3 (remote site);
Site replication with DC2 and DC3
DC2: DNS server holding secondary zones; WINS server push/pull with DC1
(same site) and DC3 (remote site); Site Replication with DC1

Remote Site:
DC3: DNS server holding secondary zones; DHCP server for remote location;
WINS server push/pull with DC1 and DC2 (at HQ); Site Replication with DC1

What is the best way to rebuild this server from backup if we have to? I
list steps what I need to do below. Can you you review and give feed back?
Thanks

- should I transfer FSMO roles to DC2 first before trying to replace the
backplane in case I cannot seize FSMO roles later

- replace the backplane. If the mirror corrupted go to next step

- stop FRS on DC2 and DC3

- on DC2: seize FSMOs' role (if not transferred previously)

- remove DC1 completely from AD per
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498/en-us)

- configure DHCP server on DC2 for HQ location

- What to do with DNS service on DC2 and DC3?

- reinstall the OS the server, keep same name DC1? keep disconnected from
network?

- restore server first, still keep disconnected from network?

- on DC2 and DC3: set BurFlags to D2

- restore system state on DC1 (assuming we keep same name)

- stop FRS on DC1, set BurFlag to D4 on DC1, connect to network and reboot.

- resume FRS on DC2 and DC3

The whole thing is expected to last 4 hrs max. Am I too possitive? Thanks

Hi
-Is the server dead? If it is, then you have the option to Seize the roles
(different from transfer), in this scenario, you can perform the seize to a
different server, but the original cannot be online again, when I say that
the original cannot be back online again , I mean that you cannot use the
backup to restore the dead server. But you can Add it as new DC, as you
would for a new server. If you choose this option, the basic steps are:
Seize the roles, perform metadacleanup for the dead server, remove old
references to the dead DC, then replicate everything and add the server
again to the domain as DC. More details here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/216498

If you choose to restore the server from backup, make sure that is Active
Directory complaint before proceed, then you do a restore as you normally
would for a situatuation like this one. Generally speaking you would need at
least the system state backup. Steps are simple, install the server,
configure the same patch level, drive configuration IP address, etc... then
do a system state restore on top of that server.

Thanks for the reply.  I think that if the mirror corrupted I will restore
the server from a backup.

When I choose this way, is it just that simple to reinstall the O/S,
configure and patch the server to current level then restore the system
state?  It is too much of a relieve for me as I was afraid there are more
things I must do with FRS.  Would it be a problem if I keep using the same
name DC1 when I reinstall the O/S?

> If you choose to restore the server from backup, make sure that is Active
> Directory complaint before proceed

Can you clarify what this mean?

HP will replace the backplane tonight so I will update the post.  Thanks a
lot.

Note: If you're replacing the blackplane of the disk, you shouldn't loose
any data, and the disks should work as nothing happen.

In answer to your questions:
Yes you can and should use the same name before doing the system state
backup.

I see that you said that your DC is online, well if you think that you'll
loose the DC on this operation, you can prepare the DC and transfer the
roles and services to other DC and them demote that DC using DCpromo, by
doing this you can add it again as a new DC to the Domain.

I hope I don't have to rebuild the DC but HP said there is no 100% warranty
of the mirror after the backplane replaced so we must have a plan B in
place.

Thanks again.

Yep, I agree with that, but to prevent worse scenario you can start to
transfer the roles and any other services before changing the hardware.

Hello ME,

Is the DC running or down and will not work anymore? If it is down and never
comes back, seize the 5 FSMO roles to one of the other DC's. Then run metadata
cleanup to remove the old DC from the database and remove it from AD sites
and services and all DNS servers.

If the server is still running, transfer the FSMO roles to one of the other
DC's and remove the secondary zones on the other DNS servers and change on
DC1 to AD integrated zones, then just let the other DC/DNS servers replicate.

If DC1 is removed complete you can reinstall it from scratch with the new
hardware, which i would prefer.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

ME
The DC is still online.  HP tech will come to replace the backplane tonight
(PST).

I think I will restore DC1 from a backup taken before I shut it down to
replace the h/w as it seems much easier for me.  I replied to Jorge Silve in
the above; can you see if I miss anything?

Regards,
