Hi,

I have 2 DHCP servers they are also our Windows 2003 domain controllers.
Thing is DC1 seems to service all the DHCP reqests, but why?  DC1 has all
the FSMO roles, so could that be it?

Both servers are on the same subnet too, DC2 has have 100's of discoveries
when I look at the DHCP stats, but no offers, requests or acks.

Yeah you are right, the 2 core switches had the 2 servers define and not the
new one, so basically the first DHCP server was the only one being seen, I
updated the Core switches to also include the new DHCP server and all is
good now.

Both are authorized DHCP servers on AD?

And yes, the first one that receives the request will automatically respond
to the client.

Why do you have two DHCP servers on the same subnet? One DHCP and different
and consolidated scopes are not enough?

Cheers

Hi
DHCP renews are sent to the last DHCP server where the IP came from 50%
before expires the lease. My guess is that your 1 DHCP was the onlyone to
offer the IPs and now all clients are using it until it becomes unavailable
to ofter new IPs. But you can have other problems, for example check if the
DHCP service is working correctly on the other server, also check if the
DHXP is authorized in AD, search for event errors, etc...

I hope that the information above helps you.
Have a Nice day.

How do you have these defined and are helper addresses pointing to both dhcp
servers?  If you have two dhcp servers on the same subnet you would want
tosplit the pool range, not sure if you have done this.  Not a good idea for
both to have a 100% of the available addresses available.

All sorted, the core switches were defining the 2 DHCP servers, all works
now.  the pool ranges are split and both are authorised.

Hello Cyborg,

I use 2 DHCP servers in the same subnet with a split scope (50/50) and both
of them are in use. Make sure the servers are both authorized in AD. If they
have different hardware, one powerful and one slower machine, then mostly
the powerful will win, because first come, first serve will work in the case
of more then one DHCP server.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

Very similar to mine, the DHCP servers were defined in our Core switches,
this is now been updated and working.
