We have only one Windows 2000 server (no Exchange used) that is also our AD
controller. We have purchased a new Server 2003 which we wish to replace our
old server with. Can I join the new server to our domain, make it a DC then
remove the 2000 box and have the 2003 server be our only AD controller? I
thought I heard somewhere that you must first upgrade your 2000 box to 2003
then add 2003 servers but I'm hoping that this is not the case.

basically:
fix schema if needed
update the schema and the domain using ADPREP
introduce w2k3 dc
"transfer" services and roles from w2k server to w2k3 server
remove w2k server by demoting it

by the way: you should always have at least 2 DCs in a domain!
