Replace Primary DC with new 2003 ServerI have a primary DC (2000) in our current domain which I would like to
replace with a newly purchased (much more powerful) 2003 unit. Can I replace our current primary DC with 2003 then upgrade our other 2000 DC's and servers to 2003 afterwards? Has anyone performed such a migration and can you point me to any documentation on the process? Is there any documentation on migrating the DNS & DHCP tables from the old to the new server? Thanks for any help on this. Yes you can do this, there is a lot of work involved though.
What I would suggest you do is leave all dc's in the domain as is. Bring this new machine in and after the prep work promote it to a dc and move the fsmo roles to it. Next demote a dc you had planned on upgrading and instead reinstall the 2003 o/s and then promote, this way you have a clean new o/s on it. Do this for each and every machine you plan on keeping in the domain and demoting any that you plan on removing. If you select the articles links on my web site and then select Decommission a DC you will find links on individual steps you are looking for: http://pbbergs.dynu.com/windows A complete step by step article by microsoft will help you migrate from 2000 to 2003 (Exchange included) in the link bwlow: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325379 -- Show quoteHide quotePaul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, CNE, CNA, CCA This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
