Upgrading to Windows 2003 from Windows 2000What tools are available to where i can import my users and printers from a
windows 2000 domain to windows 2003? thank you... rob davis Actually there's a couple of things you can do...
1. If you have a new server that will be running Windows 2003 and an old server that's running Windows 2000, then you can run DCPROMO on the 2003 server and make it a domain controller in the 2000 domain. Then all the users will be copied to the 2003 server thru replication. You have to run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep first. Those are located in the Support Tools (it's on the CD or you can download it from Microsoft. <cd drive>:\i386\support. Double click suptools.msi and install. I've not had very good luck with doing it this way though... I've tried it on 3 different domains in 3 different locations and had to just blow everything away and start with a fresh install. I had problems with the domain controllers replicating. 2. You can use the Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT)... I think that's also in the Support Tools. It doesn't migrate passwords though. 3. You can use command line tools called CSVDE or LDIFDE. Those export your users to a Comma-delimited or line-delimited file. But those don't export passwords. 4. I think your printers will have to be manually re-created on the new 2003 server. If you want to bring your AD up to 2003, I have had very good experiences with this process, provided you spend time ensuring your AD is "ship shape in Bristol Fashion" before commencing. Your biggest challenge is ensuring your ad replication is solid before you start. For this process check out http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325379 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555040/en-us If you want to migrate, ADMT v2 is your tool. It will bring across passwords, but it is really more work than it is worth. it's easier just to let the tool reset new ones Set up a test domain and take the tool for a spin. It's really quite easy to use once you get the hang of it in a test environment. The biggest challenges are setting up an external trust between the forests and ensuring that each forest can resolve eachother through DNS. Just note that if you test it in your live domain, you don't get the opportunity to re-migrate objects easily. There is a procedure for doing this, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. You can download the tool from the web, or find it in the support directory on your 2003 install cd. I'd get the latest from the web though. Some questions for you: What type of 'upgrade' are you doing? Are you simply dropping in the Windows Server 2003 CD-Media into one of your Domain Controllers (maybe the one that holds the Schema Master - using an account that is a member of the Schema Admins)? If this is the case, then you might want to look into adprep /forestprep (on the Schema Master) and adprep/domainprep (on the Infrastructure Master - in each Domain). Do you have Exchange 2000? If yes, pay attention to the possible 'Mangled Attributes' problem. Take care of that first - if present. Then do the adprep /things. Then upgrade. If you are going to start over then you might want to look into ADMT v3 (it is the newer version...have not used it just yet, but I have heard good things about it). If you are going to use ADMT then please note that there are several requirements. Please find below some links about ADMT v3: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6F86937B-533A-466D-A8E8-AFF85AD3D212&displaylang=en http://free-blog-site.com/roggenk/archive/2005/07/31/79578.aspx http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?p=23007 You will find Kurt in here a lot! There are a few more options: Have you considered simply adding a WIN2003 Domain Controller to the existing WIN2000 AD environment? Just make sure that all is very well in your current WIN2000 AD environment (or is this the reason you want to 'import'). How are the printers set up? If you have a dedicated WIN2000 Member Server for your printers then all you have to do is to disjoin that machine from the current WIN2000 Domain and add it to the 'soon-to-be' WIN2003 Domain. That is all you need.... Does this help? -- Show quoteHide quoteCary W.
