Active Directory Setup with an existing DNS Domain

To Whom Can Help:

I was spending some time trying to set up AD using an alternative method.  I
guess one would set up AD using the AD setup wizard.  I was trying to set up
AD using an existing DNS Server.  I setup a DNS server, set up a domain, and
set up foward and reverse lookup zones within the domain.  I then tried to
set up AD using the domain that I had set up in the DNS server.  I got the
error message that the RPC server was unavailable and was unable to continue
with the set up.  I could not find the RPC server.  What is that?  I tried
setting up a child domain and that went okay.  I want to set up AD using the
original domain name and not as a child domain.  I had successfully set this
up before using Windows Server 2003 trial version.  I am now using Windows
Server 2003 SP1 R2.

JYC,

You can most assuredly set up Active Directory when using an existing DNS
Domain.  That is to say, if your Active Directory DNS Name is
'yourdomain.com' you need to have a forward lookup zone named
'yourdomain.com' with all of the appropriate records (a, cname, srv).  And,
this DNS Server that you have needs to support both SRV records as well as
Dynamic Updates.

When you have an RPC error, it is usually either DNS or network related.
Oh, and RPC stands for Remote Procedure Call.
