Remove Dirty Boxes [WildPacket]

Got about 600 computers in our domain which are not active, now before I
remove them I want to ping/nslookup those in one shot.

Found few tools but don't work accordingly.

I want something in which I can import the list of all computers and then
that tool pings them and if possible perform lookups too?

Advise please.

Thank you.

This is possibly not what you want, but I would start with oldcmp from Joe
Richards' web site (http://www.joeware.net).

You did not mention which tool you have already found but did not do what
you wanted.

You might also consider using WMI to do this (and your next question would
be, "And just how do I do this?").  I have seen several scripts floating
around that will do this - at least, this and probably more that you wanted.

Does this help you?

I think he has already gone through that part of the puzzle in a previous
thread.

Paul,

Yeah.  I see that he/she has a couple of posts a few days ago (but they are
'way down' the list - this place is busy!).  Looks like he/she  is trying
dsquery and it looks like oldcmp has already been suggested.  I am not sure
that I understand why oldcmp does not do it and I am not sure why dsquery is
not working for him/her.  My guess would be that there are some underlying
issues.

I might suggest that you install the Support Tools and run dcdiag and
netdiag - both with the /v switch.

I would be good to know his/her 'layout'.  I would like to think that there
are multiple Domain Controllers.....

A ping test of this nature is flawed because of DHCP.  If you have stale
accounts, that haven't changed their password in some time, they are
offline.  Because of this, their IP address has been freed up and is in use
by another node.  However, without [DNS] scavenging, the old A record is
still in DNS.  Therefore a ping can resolve to a name that is in use and
will respond.

If you are looking to mitigate risk simply use the default (in OLDCMP) of 90
days.  Also, mention in your change control record that there is a minor
risk that some systems are still joined to the domain and that they will
need to be disjoined and rejoined.  But also mention that due to the amount
of time they have not communicated with a DC, this is a necessity regardless
of performing the clean or not.

Personally, I'd just wipe the lot of them out of there (after getting change
request approval of course).  They're only computers.
