We have an empty root.  I just started working with this company and i need
to know how to figure out which DCs are in the root domain of the forest.

Charles,
list the content of the Domain Controllers OU of the root domain. There are
many ways to accomplish this - via either graphical interface (ADUC) or
command line (dsquery or adfind) e.g.
dsquery server -domain yourrootdomain.com
