DNS during Domain Controller demotionWindows Server 2003. Does DNS get removed by the dcpromo wizard when
demoting a domain contoller. This is just one of many domain controllers in a domain. Hello ShrikeAttack,
Do you use AD integrated zones? Then you will use DNS service for this server. Reconfigure it to use another available DNS on the NIC. If it is a secondary DNS server the role has to be uninstalled via add/remove programs. The DNS service is not removed. But DNSAI only works between DCs that are also DNS servers. Assuming that your existing DCs are also DNS servers, make sure that the network clients are configured to use them. If you plan to use that DC (to be demoted) as DNS server (although you removed the DC role), you can replicate DNS settings using a secondary zone on that server. -- Show quoteHide quoteI hope that the information above helps you. The DNS is integrated in AD and I have another DC setup with DNS. My DHCP
server is also looking at the new DNS server. According to this link DNS should be installed and properly functioning prior to demoting the server. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc755937.aspx Can I safely assume I can uninstall DNS using add/remove software after the server has been demoted? Is there anything I should consider so I get a clean break from the other DNS servers in my environment? Thanks Show quoteHide quote "Jorge Silva" wrote: > Hi > The DNS service is not removed. Make sure all machines use the new DNS and check after removing the DNS role that also in the DNS zones the server is removed as DNS server. You can always point it to one of the other DCs' DNS server and remove it's own IP from IP properties so it is not reliant on itself. This is how I normally remove a DC iIn such a scenario with other available DC/DNS servers. If you do it this way, and now knowing that the current installed DNS server is not being used, do NOT delete any AD Integrated zones while it is still a DC, otherwise you will remove the zone from the whole infrastructure. Unistall it from Add/Remove. -- Ace This posting is provided "AS-IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights. your existing DC is also a DNS server, just point the clients to that DC. -- Show quoteHide quoteI hope that the information above helps you. Have a Nice day. Domain functional level
changing domain name Is this the last step we need to do? Do Child DC's need unrestricted IP access to Root DC's? After 2000 to 2003 upgrade sysvol is not accessable Manually removing cert server from AD Validation for 2000 to 2003 upgrade DC's not Replicating Delegate ad workstations to domain ADAM UserProxy Authentication (Which Domain Controller?) |
