Domain functional levelHi,
Running Windows Server 2003 AD domain in Windows 2000 mixed (single 2003 DC). We also have a single Exchange 2003 (configured for RPC over HTTPS) server and ISA 2004 at the primeter. I want to raise the domain functional level to Windows 2003. What are the cons, and maybe the pros if possible? Thanks Yba Yba,
review the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692/ for info on benefits of the Windows Server 2003 DFL (btw. you might want to also consider raising forest functional level - assuming that this is your only domain) and for best practices on its implementation. As far as implications go, note that following the change, you will not be able to install any domain controllers on systems running Windows Server 2000 (although I'd hardly consider this a con). Btw. do you currently have any Windows Server 2000 DCs? If not, I'd strongly advise installing another Windows Server 2003 DC in your domain before you proceed... hth Marcin Show quoteHide quote "Yba" <Y**@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:15C17132-D082-4658-A133-E365BA436AEE@microsoft.com... > Hi, > Running Windows Server 2003 AD domain in Windows 2000 mixed (single 2003 > DC). Thanks for the article. Yes, I have only one domain. Can you please clarify the basis of the recommendations: 1 - Raise the forest functional level. 2 - Add another 2003 DC to the domain. new functionality - the second provides redundancy) - so their sequence is not really relevant here (and the end result would be the same either way). Although there is obviously administrative overhead of managing two DCs and making sure they properly communicate (but that's taken into account in the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692/ I referenced earlier) hth Marcin Show quoteHide quote "Yba" <Y**@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:D3036281-50EA-4D9E-B950-72695E96CA3B@microsoft.com... > Hi, > Thanks for the article. > Yes, I have only one domain. I am trying to raise the functional level and receive an error that can not. When I look at the log file it states that - The following domain controllers are running earlier versions of windows: xx.xx.xx server.domain. Windows Server 2003 5.2 (3790) There are 3 domain controllers in this domain, earch running enterprise 2003 sp2. I do not know why it says earlier version - what does this mean? It is has current updates applied. thank you -- spenzr ------------------------------------------------------------------------ spenzr's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/77089.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/active-directory/1115448.htmhttp://forums.techarena.in Hello spenzr,

was this domain controller "xx.xx.xx server.domain. Windows Server 2003 5.2 (3790)" previously a windows 2000 server that was upgraded to 2003? I suggest you do it manually by following this guidelines from microsoft. Start first with "Preparation tasks before the level increase" and then do the manual raise. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322692 Isaac Show quoteHide quote "spenzr" <spenzr.3piv3a@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:spenzr.3piv3a@DoNotSpam.com... > > I want to raise it to windows 2003. changing domain name
Is this the last step we need to do? Do Child DC's need unrestricted IP access to Root DC's? After 2000 to 2003 upgrade sysvol is not accessable Manually removing cert server from AD Delegate ad workstations to domain Validation for 2000 to 2003 upgrade DC's not Replicating ADAM UserProxy Authentication (Which Domain Controller?) Way to set using Active Directory, which ports for remote desktop? |
