Win2k3R2 Domain Preparing for Win2k8 Member & Domain Controllers

Hi,
We have 4 DC's, all WINDOWS 2003 R2. ( no Windows 2000 DC's of course )
We have 1 Windows 2000 Member Server which houses our Intranet.

I just recently raised the forest and domain level to : Windows 2003

We run Exchange 2007 as well.

We are looking to add a Windows 2008 Member Server to the domain and join it.

Q:  Can I just install Windows 2008 32-bit Standard without Hyper-V and join
the domain without any issues?

-------------------------------

I assume NO, I need to prepare for Windows 2008 Domain Controllers first.

I've reviewed the link :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731314.aspx

My plan would be:

Run --------  adprep /forestprep from the fsmo DC at 7 pm after hours
Run --------  adprep /domainprep /gpprep from Infrastructure Master the next
day 7 pm

That should allow more then enough time for replication of each upgrade to
occur, well beyond what required.

From my understanding that is all that is needed ....as per Page 1 of
"Introduce a Windows Server 2008-Based Member Server"

Q:  Do you agree?

I'll leave the questions at that.

Hello Kyle,

If the 2008 server should only be a member server, doesn't matter if Hyper-V
or not, you do NOT have to upgrade the schema. Schema upgrade is only needed
if you will promote a 2008 DC in the domain.

Best regards

Just an update, I installed a 64 bit machine Windows 2008 Member server and
joined our domain.  All went well - THANK YOU!

Q:  I have to upgrade the Schema to run OCS Server, but am not ready to
update all DC's to 2008 .

Can I just run these two commands to get OCS Server to run?

When I run the OCS installer is fails with
Forest Prep: The forest Schema is not prepared to host Office communications
server [ 0xc3ec7800]

Hello Kyle,

Schema update doesn't require to upgrade the DC's also. OCS itself has its
own schema changes so not from 2008. Use the setup disk and follow the disk.
There should be an automatic GUI way described about the needed steps.

Also this guide will help to upgrade the schema for OCS:

Hello,

Thank you so much for your time.  The schema is upgraded but the forest prep
error is still there.

When I run the OCS installer is fails with
Forest Prep: The forest Schema is not prepared to host Office communications
server [ 0xc3ec7800]

This is why I'm thinking it must be a 2008 domain?

Hello Kyle,

Are all DC's up and running? Check with repadmin /showrepl that no errors
exist.

Also see here, expand the "+" in the left pane:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb905920.aspx

Also check this article about mangled attributes, do not take care about
exchange, check the 3 attributes:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314649

My co-worker re-ran the install wizard and it proceeded through just fine.
The previous work I did (in this post) was sufficient, I'm not sure what my
co-worker did wrong, maybe she re-ran the setup before replication occured.

All this work was done a long time ago though.

Sorry about this...  At least it proves you don't need a win2k8 DC running
to run OCS.  Lets see if the rest of it gets installed.
