The power went out few times. The server was not on UPS. and now when I
logon it says "applying computer settings". It has been like this for almost
24 hours. I did a dirty shutdown twice with the same results. The server is
working fine. I can access all resources. I looked at the log but there was
nothing to report. The function of the server is as follow:

1. domain controller
2. DNS server
3. DHCP server
4. Spam server.
5. Exchange front end.

All 5 work fine. I just can not logon. Any suggestions.

I know that you said that you are not on a UPS, but could you by
chance have the PowerChute software installed?  If so, you may want to
look at this:

How do I find out if I the powerChute installed? I can access the c drive. I
can see the log files and I can access services remotely.

Hello Dooma,

"C:\Program files" maybe or registry, open regedit and "connect network registry",
choose the remote server and have a look there.

Best regards

If you find that the Power Chute software is not installed, I would suggest
to look at the Event viewer and post all of the error EventID numbers you
may find. If you can't login to get to them, go to another server and open
event viewer and choose to open this server's event log to take a look,

Is there more than one DC?
Does this server have more than one NIC?

Also please post an unedited ipconfig /all of this server.

Since this server holds many roles (more than I would be comfortable with
because of Exchange on a DC), I assume you have a recent successful backup
jusgt in case there is something other than a possible Power Chute software
problem?

Sorry I missed the other questions. This is a domain controller. I am have
another domain controller. I do not have the power chute installed. It had
one network card. I have a backup of the server. I do not know how to run
ipconfig on a server if I can not logon to it. Can you advice?

You can use psexec from the (free) PSTools to run ipconfig remotely. There
are numerous errors. If this is a DC, is it communicating and replicating to
the other DC? Does the other DC have any errors inthe NTFRS or directory
service logs?
