AD newbie QuestionI have a Windows 2003 R2 Standard DS server SP2
Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations Also have HP Color Laserjet 4550N network printer Can I add this printer to active directory so that users can select it from the directory? If so how do I do that? I can ping the ip address from my workstations and server the printer is showing in my wins database. Do I need to add it to my DNS server also? Thanks in advance Tom I got it working thanks
Just added the printer to my server using its ip address and it then showed up in AD automatically Thanks Tom Show quoteHide quote "Thomas R Grassi Jr" <thomasgra***@hotmail.com> wrote in message news:%23uyf%239lpJHA.6096@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >I have a Windows 2003 R2 Standard DS server SP2 > > Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations > > Also have HP Color Laserjet 4550N network printer > > Can I add this printer to active directory so that users can select it > from the directory? Great, but also remember that you have some cool features in R2 to deploy printers automatically to users or computers. check it: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Managing-Printers-Windows-Server-2003-R2.html -- Show quoteHide quoteI hope that the information above helps you. It fails to work reliable and lacks basic functionality like setting a default printer. Even removing printers is not as reliable. IF you're going to manage printer deployment with Group Policy, using Group Policy Preferences or printui.dll scripting is still the way to go. The printer should have it's own ip address and then be installed as network printer with TCP/IP port on the server which you use as print server. Clients can then add the printer with the wizard from AD list. Have a look here about printer management: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=83066ddc-bc96-4418-a629-48c8abd2c7a0&displaylang=en Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. ** Please do NOT email, only reply to Newsgroups ** HELP us help YOU!!! http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm Show quoteHide quote > I have a Windows 2003 R2 Standard DS server SP2 > > Windows XP Pro SP3 workstations > > Also have HP Color Laserjet 4550N network printer > > Can I add this printer to active directory so that users can select it > from the directory? about making your printer definitions in a subdomain of your domain itself. So when you want to look for your printers they all reside in their own name space. so mydomain.com would store all of its printers within printers.mydomain.com -- Show quoteHide quotePaul Bergson MVP - Directory Services MCTS, MCT, MCSE, MCSA, Security+, BS CSci 2008, 2003, 2000 (Early Achiever), NT4 http://www.pbbergs.com Please no e-mails, any questions should be posted in the NewsGroup This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
