Creating a Lab Environment Using Virtual Machine

Good morning.
We are trying to setup a lab version of our active directory using
Virtual PC. We want to make a copy of our first domain controller to
test upgrading it from 2000 to 2003. We have a single domain
environment, not too complicated. I did a full ntbackup of the machine,
and tried to restore it in a Virtual Machine 2000 Advanced Server using
Directory Services Restore Mode and I got the BSOD saying unmountable
boot volume..is there any special thing I need to do to make this work?
Can this even be done, and if so would it work better with another
alternative like Ghost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would run sysprep and tell it to re-run mini-setup at next boot up.
DON'T regenerate SIDs, as that would probably mess up your Active
Directory domain. It sounds like it isn't detecting your harddisks
properly due to the hardware change.

You can use a copy of P2V from VMware to create a virtual image from a
physical machine. It requires a machine to run the console from and a
bootable CD created from an ISO from VMWare.

If you go to VMWares website I believe they allow you to download it
for evaluation purposes. They will send you an email with the license
and download instructions once you have requested and evaluation.

By doing this you will overcome all these issue and have a true replica
of your environment in a virtual world.

Once you have the image don't forget to take a snapshot so you can
re-run your test from the initial point without having to recreate the
image.

Whether you use an image or a full backup you have the same issue -
different hardware.

As mentioned, you can use P2V from VMWare if you had VMWare, or VSMT for
Virtual Server, but neither for VPC.  Personally, I would build a clean VM
and promote it into the live environment and then turn it off and cleanup
AD:

Then boot the VM in isolation and perform the same cleanup but for all
missing DCs (those still in live).  Also point to self for DNS and seize the
OM roles.  Now you have a replica of your live environment.
