Hello Everyone ? On searching Active DirectoryI am really new to wanted to search Active Directory so I thought I would ask
this question to the experts. Question 1 For example when doing a search on People or Printers it lets me pull up the active directory list. However, when I search on computers it looks like it pulls the netbios names with the description basically the same as a net view is this how it is suppose to work? Question 2 The next question is basically I would like to get the computer name which islike cpuname????, the client version, the ip-address, Location, or the netbios description in active directory where I could do look ups. Is this possible, or even allowed. Is there anyway I can add fields or so. I know that all the information is basically in the dhcp list and the net view list. However, I would like one place to search. If you could point me into a right direction or any kb articles I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks Dan Dan,
Firstly, i think you should have placed this in the Windows Server newsgroup. 1) The Active Directory search for computers is supposed to give you just that. 2) If you are looking for something that lets you search based on specific parameters like CPU, RAM, location, OS version,... etc. you will need to use a hardware inventory system. Microsoft has a product called Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 that does this and more. SMS can automatically discover all clients on your network and build an "inventory" consisting of the hardware specs/software installed on the machines in a central database (inventory). Searches can be made on this inventory. SMS also lets you remotely "push" applications, updates (patch management), remotely control clients (central remote assistance), desktop deployment, metering usage of specific applications, and more. You can get more info on SMS 2003 at http://www.microsoft.com/smserver/evaluation/overview/default.mspx Post back and let us know if this helps. I apologize for not posting it, but I thought you would be able to search for the windows version through active directory search tool so that is why I asked it here in the active directory group. I know when I find computers it gives me the computer and the description and even has a column for the os but it does not display from the client machine. However, at the server I can see what type of client os is on a machine. Anyways I was hoping active directory could tell me some stuff, but guess not. I will look into SMS.
