ADAM back and restoreWith ADAM, if you have 2 instances under the same confiugration set...
Can you backup server 1 and essentially restore that data to server 2 if server 2 dies for some reason? I need to know the requirement to whether a replica must be backed up as well, or if you can just use the backup from the primary ADAM server and restore to Replica server? I know that the USN's will replicate back and forth. However, is there something missing here? -- Cheers, Greg Williams, MCSE 2000/2003 + Security/Messaging I don't know ADAM very well, and have only looked at it in a lab. However I
would imagine that in this case it is just like it's big brother. You don't need to back it up, as you can always restore the "primary" instance and let the downstream instance replicate that. However, it is usually recommended that you backup both. I can't see you being able to restore using the backup set, unless you are able to delete and recreate from media, like with k3 DCPROMO. But Joe, Joe, Lee, Dmitri and Eric are better people to answer... -- Paul Williams Microsoft MVP - Windows Server - Directory Services http://www.msresource.net | http://forums.msresource.net Hi
basically what Paul said. In any given config set I would backup two instances (one for DR and one as insurance against the DR backup). The DR copy is for total loss of the config set or for authoritative restore, if you have branch offices you can also use it to install replicas from media. If you lose a member of a config set then just install another ADAM replica instance (optionally from media). Ideally you would want to run a metadata cleanup of the failed instance, unfortunately this can be a little tricky. Restoring a backup from one ADAM instance to another should be avoided; it often works for standalone ADAM instances, for config set members it's unecessary and (probably) unsupported.
