Domain Rename Operation - Windows XP Control Station?

I am most likely going to have to rename a domain soon. This domain only has
1 DC and is in a remote office.

In the domain rename webcast and the documentation, it is said that you need
a Windows 2003 member server to perform the rendom commands from. The
"Control Station". I don't have that luxury in this specific situation, so I
have two questions.

1. Can I run rendom and gpfixup from a  Windows XP SP2 member machine?
2. Can I run redom on the DC itself? The documentation warns against this,
but I thought I'd ask anyway).

I am in the process of setting up a "lab" environment to try and duplicate
what I am going to have to do using VMWare. That should help me identify some
pot holes in this operation.

Thanks.

I believe, but am not 100% sure as I have yet to rename a domain, that you
can do this from a workstation.  You will probably find it works on a DC
too.  However, as you have a virtualised lab, the best thing to do is test
both scenarios.  Firstly, run it from a member server.  Then, when you know
how it goes, try it from a workstation and then from the DC itself.

Cool.

If I have to do it from a member server, I will simply install VMWare on one
of the XP machines and place my virtual server on it and do it from there.
Good thing VM disks are somewhat compressable. That's quite a bit of data to
move over links that are not the fattest. :)
