We just purchased a new server and are wanting to replace our first domain
controller. From what I understand there is nothing special or different
about the first domain controller from the second (we have 3 domain
controllers).

Is there anything special that I am going to have to do? This is what I have
planned:

1. dcpromo new server to domain controller
2. dcpromo old server out of domain
3. take old server offline

Hello Andrew,

if the old server is holding any fsmo roles transfer them to
other servers

another thing to be aware of is global catalogs - if the old
server is the only global catalog in your domain, make other
dc(s) global catalog(s) too before taking the old one offline

Those steps will work fine.  As DCPROMO will automatically transfer the FSMO
roles to another DC in the site of the DC you are demoting.  However, you
need to give thought to GC and DNS placement.

Take a look at this article for assistance:

Realistically, the first DC in a forest is "special" in as much as it holds
all the FSMO roles and is automatically configured as a GC.  It is usually
configured as a DNS server too.
