old files in staging area

Hi,
I'm having very old files in the staging area folder of my BHS DC (a month
old).
I've read the files should be deleted after 7 days.
can I delete the old files without a risk ? can I configure frs not to
reproduce the problem ?
Do you have an idea about the reasons why this problem can occur ?

How old is very old? If more than, for example, 28 days, I would probably
delete them and keep and eye on the logs to ensure all is still well.
