I'm going to be upgrading a SBS 2000 domain to a full windows 2003 domain and
my last step is going to be retiring the SBS box - by taking it off-line by
shutting it down - and I have a question about how to best transfer fsmo
roles to a windows 2003 DC that will be introduced to the domain before the
SBS box shutdown.

Can I move any of the fsmo roles from the SBS box to the 2003 DC before the
SBS box is shutdown? If so, which ones? Or does the 2003 DC have to seize all
fsmo roles after the shutdown?

Thanks

I'm not 100% sure on this, its been a while since I have worked with SBS so
take this for what its worth. You will probably have to bring up a new domain
in parallel. The whole point of SBS is that it is your ONLY server. You can't
run other Domain Controllers etc. in the domain.

100% wrong on that one BMoritz. While SBS does have restrictions, none of
those mentioned are factual.

There are some deffinate limmitations to SBS:
The server is a single-domain solution, which is not intended to be
integrated with other Windows domains. You are not permitted to establish
explicit trusts to other Microsoft Windows NT nor to Active Directory
domains. Also, Small Business Server 2000 does not enable you to create child
domains.

You can have other domain controllers and member servers in your Small
Business Server network, however, Small Business Server 2000 must be set up
as the root domain controller of a Microsoft Active Directory forest.

100% right! ( and expanding a little, the SBS server must have all 5 FSMO
roles and be a GC)

There's also licensing restrictions about all SBS components installed on
and only on the SBS server.

So, that being the case you could not "upgrade" you existing SBS domain to a
2003 Standard server domain right?

My SBS 2000 domain has other 2000 DCs running and will have a 2003 DC added
before the retirement of the SBS machine.
All other necessary components (i.e.: Exchange Server, SQL Server, etc) have
been broken out to other machines.

From what I have been able to find out, if the SBS box isn't the root DC of
the domain (done by permanently removing/shutting down the SBS box) then you
no longer have an SBS domain - which I don't want/need anymore - but as I far
as I know the domain still exists and will continue to function once the fsmo
roles are seized by another machine. Is that not true?

Based on the replies the belief is that none of the fsmo roles can be moved
before the retirement of the SBS box and they will have to be seized by the
new 2003 DC.

Thanks

I know in a full Standard 2000/2003 domain you can recover any of the FSMO
roles by forcing the move. Basically if a DC died it had an FSMO role on it
and you did not want to go through the hassle if restoring it you could move
that FSMO. How this pertains to SBS and any problems you may run into, that
unfortunately I can’t answer.

I guess you could shut down the SBS server and try to recover the roles, if
it does not work boot it back up?

In any case GOOD LUCK!
