Single Domain Controller 2003 Disaster Recovery ProcedureHi
I would like to know what should be backed up and how to restore single domain controller 2003 from that backup. We also have Single Exchange Server 2003 SP2 on the same domain. Many thanks for your help An Best practice is to have two domain controllers to avoid having to go to
tape as much as possible. If you have Exchange, this best practice is again highlighted because Exchange is so dependent on AD. Otherwise, you'll want to have a look at the disaster recovery white paper on Microsoft's site that discusses what to backup and how to restore it in detail. Catalog's. You should be using a backup specifically built for backing up Active Directory (NTBACKUP - supplied will do this for free but not a nightly schedule job. It is better than it used to be but it is free so don't expect much). Exchange server needs to run a backup with special software as well. I believe you can schedule a job to do brick level backups via exmerge. A brick level backup logs onto Exchnage and then dumps each individual mailbox DR for AD http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/technologies/activedirectory/maintain/opsguide/part1/adogd03.mspx We use Veritas for both AD and Exchange http://www.veritas.com/exchangead/ Using EXMerge for brick level backups, Petri has an outstanding article on this: http://www.petri.co.il/brick_level_backup_of_mailboxes_by_using_exmerge.htm -- Show quoteHide quotePaul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, CNE, CNA, CCA http://www.pbbergs.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. a nightly scheduled AD backup? I do it and also have a scheduled job that copies it to another server for backup to tape. Also, I'm surprised you are even talking about brick level backups...... Brick level backups allow an easy way to recover an individuals mailbox. You still need a full backup (NTBackup will suffice) but have you ever recovered an individual mailbox from a full mailstore backup? Just because love4love didn't specifically mention a brick level backup I felt if they weren;t aware of it they should be given the option to have some background on it. -- Show quoteHide quotePaul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, CNE, CNA, CCA http://www.pbbergs.com This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I've supported a non-profit with about 200 mailboxes and only once in 4+ years have I had to recover a mailbox. Also I agree with Al Munik's post. We're talking about Exchange 2003. With RSG, why would you want to even bother with brick level backups??? -- Show quoteHide quoteRegards, Hank Arnold "Paul Bergson" <pbergson@allete_nospam.com> wrote in message news:%23xtJ2ZrQGHA.4952@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... > Schedule a NTBackup - Like I said you get what you pay for. > > Brick level backups allow an easy way to recover an individuals mailbox. > You still need a full backup (NTBackup will suffice) but have you ever > recovered an individual mailbox from a full mailstore backup? I'm providing options. 200 mailboxes is
very small. I'm happy you have only had to restore a mailbox once, that means brick level wouldn't serve you, but again how do I know your layout and there are others in here who read these responses in an effort to evaluate there situation. Imagine how long it is going to take to restore a 250 gig mailstore for one mailbox (Actually1 lost e-mail within that mailstore). I don't know your layout but I have seen and experienced such a situation. -- Show quoteHide quotePaul Bergson MCT, MCSE, MCSA, CNE, CNA, CCA http://www.pbbergs.com This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
