From reading the previous Server upgrade post, I am starting to understand
the process of upgrade to 2003 Server.

We have a windows 2000 domain with 3 windows 2000 Server. Server 1 is the
root Server running DNS, DHCP. Server 2 is the member server running windows
2000 and Exchange 2000 with certificate services installed for the VPN. We
just purchased 2 new Server we are planning to replace Server 1 and Server 2
to 2003 and Exchange 2003 Server.
My question is once we transfer the role from Server 1 to the new 2003
Server. How do I go about transfer Server 2 "Exchange 2000" to our new
Exchange 2003 Server? Any help will be much appreciated

Thank you

If you install the new Exchange 2003 server as a second server in the same
administrative group. then you just move all the mailboxes and public
folders then follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307917/en-us to
decommission the first exchange server. Follow-ups really should go in the
exchange group though.

Certificate Authority though is another beast. I would point you to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/298138/en-us to get grasp of the issue and
then refer you to on security.crypto newsgroup.

Hello KJ

Thank you for your answer to my questions.   After I installed the new 2003
Server to the network. I will run dcpromo on the new server, once the process
is completed. I will transfer the FSMO role from Server 1 "Windows 2000 root
Server" to the new 2003 Server? If this procedure is correct. Do I still have
to run adprep /forestprep on the 2003 Server before I install Exchange 2003
Server ?

Thank you very much

Yes, you need to run ADPREP for Windows Server 2003 and you also need to run
the Exchange forest and domain preps (via the exchange setup app/ exe).

Before you even get started, go read
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314649/en-us
(InetOrgPersonfix )
The article also has other helpful links for your objective.

You'll need to do adprep (domain and forest) prior to dcpromo of the new
2003 server.

You'll  need to do adprep (domain and forest) using the Exchange 2003 setup
disk prior to installing the second Exchange server.
