Hi all,

I would like to use w2k3 R2 to be domain controller in the exsiting w2k3
domain, however, it said it is not compatitble with the forest. But all my DC
is running w2k3.
Do I need to do something in order to make w2k3 R2 to be a domain controller?

Thanks
Howard

You have used the adprep from the standard 2003 release.  There is a R2
adprep that exists on disk 2.

Have a look at this article.  It explains how to install R2 onto a DC:

I have tried to run adprep /forest in win2k3 R2, however it said "Adprep
cannot run on this platform because it is not a domain controller.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep stopped without making any changes.
[User Action]
Run Adprep on a domain controller.

Do I need to do something in AD that I would like to join to dc.
Thanks
Howard

Where are you running ADPREP?  On a domain member or a stand-alone system?

Run it on the schema master and you'll have no issues.

In fact, ,my situation is that, I have a root AD called test.com and have
child DC called hk.test.com, which are both w2k3 server. Now, I would like to
install a DC for hk.test.com, then I install w2k3 R2 to run dcprom, then
getting the error mentioned before. That being the case, I run adprep in w2k3
R2, however, the error still exsits.
Then, how can I do in order to use w2k3 R2 to be a DC in hk.test.com?

Thanks,
Howard

Before anything, you need to extend the schema.  By default, the schema
master resides in test.com.  Therefore you need to logon to a DC, preferably
the schema master itself, as a member of enterprise and schema admins and
run ADPREP.  Once that has finished, force replication using REPLMON.  Check
that the changes have replicated to DCs in hk.test.com (my article shows how
to do this) and then run DCPROMO on the new R2 box in hk.test.com.

If you are getting errors, please post the DCPROMO log file from
%systemroot%\debug
